Dental implants are needed when a tooth has been removed or must be removed because it cannot be restored with fillings, root canal, or crown placement. There is no root in the bone and the implant serves to replace the root to firmly anchor the new tooth to the bone. The implant can hold both a fixed or removable replacement of one or more needed teeth.. Dental implants are placed into the bone of the jaw directly (mandibile or maxilla) and they are made of titanium. The titanium implant anchors into the bone mechanically when placed and then slowly fuses with the bone over time because of the way human bone responds to titanium. This response is known as osseointegration, and is generally a very strong fusion. Next, abutment posts are inserted into the implant anchors and the permanent cosmetically pleasing and functional tooth attachment is added.
